Ferry Overturn in Nile River Leaves Over Twenty Dead
Officials from the Nile River state government reported that rescue teams had retrieved 21 bodies following Wednesday's disaster, with operations ongoing to locate remaining missing persons.
The vessel was transporting more than 27 passengers—including women, children, and elderly individuals—when it overturned while navigating between Taiba Al-Khawad and Deim Al-Qarray in the Shendi locality, local media outlets reported.
In a separate statement, the Sudan Doctors Network condemned the incident, emphasizing that the catastrophe underscores critical deficiencies in river transportation safety protocols and the delayed response from emergency services "which exacerbated the scale of the disaster."
The medical organization urged officials "to take urgent action to dispatch specialized rescue teams and search and recovery equipment" while pressing for immediate implementation of safety standards to prevent future maritime disasters that cost innocent lives.
The tragedy draws attention to the precarious state of river transit systems and inadequate emergency response infrastructure in the region, according to the Sudan Doctors Network's assessment.
