UN Imposes Sanctions on Sudanese Paramilitary Leaders for El-Fasher Abuses

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council has placed sanctions on four leaders of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in response to atrocities committed in the western city of el-Fasher, as stated by reports.

Among those targeted are RSF deputy commander Abdul Rahim Hamdan Dagalo and Brigadier General Al-Fateh Abdullah Idris, widely known as Abu Lulu, who earned the nickname the “Butcher of el-Fasher.” The sanctions also affect RSF deputy commander Gedo Hamdan Ahmed and field commander Tijani Ibrahim.

A spokesman for Tasis, a coalition of civilian and armed groups led by the RSF, criticized the sanctions as “unfair,” claiming they rely on “partial” and “unneutral” reports.

The capture of el-Fasher in October marked one of the most violent episodes of Sudan’s nearly three-year civil war. Last week, a UN fact-finding mission stated that the takeover displayed characteristics of genocide.

While the RSF has acknowledged that “violations” occurred in el-Fasher and said it is investigating them, the group maintains that the extent of the atrocities has been exaggerated by its opponents.

Tasis told a news agency that allegations of killing civilians and restricting their movement were “misleading,” emphasizing that its forces evacuated more than 800,000 people from el-Fasher during military operations and “provided them with food and medicine.” “All these facts showed that the sanctions imposed by UNSC are unjust,” the coalition added.

The UN cited Dagalo, brother of RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemedti,” as overseeing operations during the city’s capture, highlighting his forces’ involvement in mass killings and ethnically targeted executions.
