UNESCO strengthens Sudan’s expertise for cultural heritage recovery
UNESCO also conducted rapid damage and risk assessments at 12 cultural heritage sites affected by the conflict, including the Complex of the Republican Palace, the Natural History Museum, the National Museum of Ethnography, the National Archives of Sudan, the National Library of Sudan and other cultural properties such as churches and a mosque.
Fifteen national heritage professionals were invited to follow the on-site assessment. Participants learned how to apply the UNESCO-ICCROM international methodology for rapid on-site damage and risk assessment of cultural heritage, covering systematic rapid documentation of damage, risk identification and prioritization of immediate emergency actions.
The assessments provided important evidence on the condition of affected sites, existing risks and priority needs, helping national authorities make informed decisions on immediate protection and future recovery interventions.
